Why do most 3d applications (blender, 3dmax, maya) use grey as their default background color?
Can someone explain it to me??

I think grey is the most usefull color for these kind of programs. White is to bright. Black is to dark. And other colors like (red, green or blue) are to colorfull. So grey is the color in the middle of these colors. It's my opinion.

Interesting question, really Perhaps this light grey is also used because it can`t be found very much in the real world (at least only in towns)

Most scene are colorfull, gay is always where RGB value is equal. So this color should mostly does not hit scene color. I guess so However, I am using NEVER black as background color for developing with opengl. To often you are using some kind of darkness and have trouble to seperate object and background color from each other. I am using generally a pretty dark blue (0.0,0.0,0.3) as backgroundcolor. From behind it looks like black, but you are able to see even dark lines on it.

If I whant to detect artefacts or something I use eye slighting colors like cyan. They look so terrible, that you can find Artefacts really easy.
